Introduction to Laser Therapy

Dear Valued Patient,

We are pleased to announce that our office is trained in Laser Periodontal Therapy and now offer this treatment using the world’s first digital dental laser–the PerioLase MVP-7.  Enjoy the Introduction Video!

There are a lot of laser companies out there. Not all laser therapy is the same. This laser was specifically designed for treating periodontal disease. This addition makes it possible for us to effectively treat gum disease problems and establish ideal conditions for healing the gums around teeth that have periodontal pockets, right in our office.

The PerioLase MVP-7 laser now gives us a gentle and effective way to stop the damage being done by the infections in the gums. Patients who have had this form of laser treatment report that they have little or no discomfort after the procedure. We are proud to be among the first of the growing number of Periodontal offices in the country to provide this breakthrough laser treatment to our patients.

With this new treatment capability, we are able to safely and effectively treat most periodontal disease. If you are experiencing bleeding gums, have pockets in excess of 5mm, and should be referred to a Periodontist, then this procedure may provide you an opportunity to regain better oral health.

Approximately 75% of the population struggles with this disease. We are excited to provide you with the latest method of treatment. In this website you will find a lot of useful information. Please take time to look it over. If you cannot find the answers you are looking for, then feel free to contact us directly and we will be happy to discuss your treatment with you.

Our primary concern is for your comfort and safety. We will prescribe antibiotics to prevent the possibility of infection, as well as an anti-inflammatory (Ketoprofen) to control discomfort and swelling. You will start taking both medications the day before surgery. Some patients may need to take an oral sedative (Halcion) prior to the procedure to help you relax.

Laser Periodontal Therapy (LPT) is a relatively painless procedure. Most patients experience little to no discomfort. In fact, you can expect to return to work the day after surgery.

One of the contributing factors of periodontal disease is trauma from tooth to tooth contact; therefore we may recommend you sleep with a night guard. It may also be necessary to make minor adjustments (grinding) to your teeth so that they all function equally (bite together with an even amount of force).

Your home care is very important. We will make certain recommendation regarding your home care. This will include an antibacterial mouth rinse (Crest Pro-Health). We cannot stress enough the importance of good daily hygiene habits. It is also vitally important that you continue regular 3 month maintenance appointments with either one of our hygienists or at your general dentist.

Periodontal disease is a chronic infection. Once you are a periodontal patient, you are a periodontal patient for life. There is no cure for periodontal disease. LPT is an excellent form of treatment, but it is not a cure. The goal of LPT is to reverse some of the effects of the disease and to help you maintain a healthy mouth.

By working together, we can help you treat this serious disease. Our goal is to assist you with obtaining the best care for your mouth and to preserve good overall health. We are looking forward to participating in your care!

We work hard every day to earn your trust and confidence. Thank you for your continued support over the years.

Sincerely,

David W. Engen, DDS, MSD Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology

Due to the severity of my dental needs, my regular dentist referred me to Dr. Engen’s office. Being referred to a periodontal specialist is not something I would wish upon anyone, and it was difficult going to another dentist. However, from the minute I entered their office I was greeted by professional, friendly staff members who acknowledged me with a warm smile and a pleasant, cheerful welcome. The doctors and hygienists demonstrated a high level of expertise and technical competency by effectively communicating the options available to address my dental needs. Each and every staff member I encountered, from the receptionist, to the doctors are extremely dedicated to creating a long term relationship with each one of their patients, including taking the time to educate each patient about oral hygiene. The staff at your office works harmoniously, cooperatively and effectively as a team to make your time with them as productive as possible. I would highly recommend this office to anyone seeking resolution to any dental issues and be assured you will be pleasantly surprised with your time with them.

He was very friendly, and made me feel comfortable about what was going to happen and the steps we needed to take.
