Forsus

ForsusForsusTM

When the lower jaw is retrusive (back) relative to the upper jaw, we sometimes use an appliance called the Forsus appliance to encourage jaw growth by positioning the lower jaw forward.

The Forsus acts in a similar manner as a Herbst appliance. When the lower jaw is brought forward it brings the condyle (jaw joint) out of the fossa creating a “vacuum”. Nature does not like a vacuum and this encourages bone growth on the condyle in a backward direction thereby lengthening the jaw.

I would highly recommend Dr. Engen and his office staff to anyone whose child was apprehensive about having braces. Other than the high level of professionalism, I appreciate the down-play of cutsie-pie gimmicks for kids. He thoroughly explained everything to us right from the start.
